Upcoming fashionista wants to empower girls
Young and upcoming designer Madira Dorah Matlala.
MADIRA Dorah Matlala (18) from Deco Grove estate in Townsview is a young and upcoming fashionista who wants to empower girls through her designs.
She matriculated last year and is currently in her first year in fashion design at Fashion Academy Network. She was not aware that her talent was in fashion design and at first took it up as a hobby. As time went by she realised that reading and writing was not her thing but fashion is something that defines her and she opted to go for it.
“My mother wanted to teach herself to do sewing on a machine and bought one. I saw it as an opportunity to advance my skills in sewing and before long I was able to make a jacket and few pants without using patterns,” Madira told the COURIER.
Madira likes designing casual and formal clothes and most of those designs are girls designs. She said there is a gap in the market and she believes that people will love her designs because it will empower young girls to own their bodies with boldness and pride.
“I don’t follow trends. I lead. My aim is to, through the fashion design industry, reach my goals to help people dress in a way that will express how they feel,” added Madira.
Madira dreams of opening her own gallery one day where people can come and buy her designs. She is also a worship singer at her church.
