Crime statistics report for City of Johannesburg

City’s JMPD is working hard to increase the levels of safety within our communities.

THE executive mayor of the City of Johannesburg Clr Herman Mashaba, MMC for Safety, Clr Michael Sun, and Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) chief, David Tembe, released crime statistics report for the City of Johannesburg on October 29.

The statistics released reflect operations carried out by the JMPD for the month of September.

Safety remains a key concern for many of the residents. Though policing remains a provincial and national competency, per the Constitution, within its limited mandate, the City’s JMPD is working hard to increase the levels of safety within our communities.

With respect to operations conducted by the JMPDs K9 Narcotics Tactical Unit (K9 Narcotics Unit), 37 stolen vehicles were recovered during the month of September, bringing the total number of recovered vehicles to 138 since the month of July. In addition, 10 firearms were also recovered since the month of July.

With respect to Operation Buya Mthetho, JMPD conducted 25 visible policing operations within troublesome identified buildings between the months of July to September, with 12 arrests made. In addition to this, during the same period, a total of 670 vehicles were impounded through operations for detecting un-roadworthy taxis and vehicles. The city has also issued 200 201 Administrative Adjudication of Road Traffic Offence Infringement notices for the month of September.

Mashaba said, “As a City, we will continue to do all that is within our power to ensure that we create safe and connected communities throughout Johannesburg. Alongside this, we will continue work with our law enforcement authorities to see to it that where arrests are made by JMPD, these cases are not only investigated but also properly prosecuted by law enforcement authorities.”

Illegal activities can be reported at the following numbers:

• Anti-Corruption hotline: 0800 203 712
