Help needed at Areyeng Residence Home

They accommodate patients with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar.

AREYENG Residence Home for the mentally ill, which is situated at 19 Cyfret Crescent, Tedderfield, Eikenhof, needs assistance for its residents and the premises.

They are desperately in need of washing machines. Manager of the home Kathrine Maré said their old machines have been running for years and they are irreparable.

“We have approached a Speed Queen importer who has very generously offered to supply us with three Speed Queen machines at a landed cost of R9 200 including VAT each, which comes to a total of R27 600 for three new machines.

“We are desperate for assistance as we do not have this kind of money to purchase the washing machines and are at present washing by hand. It would be great if the public, including individuals and business people, could help us in this regard,” she said.

This NGO was founded in 2004 by Patricia Maré and it caters to the needs of mentally ill patients, creating a home environment for them because some of the patients do not have any known family. They accommodate patients with severe mental illness such as schizophrenia and bipolar disorders. They are licensed to accommodate 40 patients, male and female.

The home is run by management and staff reporting to a fully functional committee. They ascribe to the general rules and regulations of Gauteng Mental Health under which they are licensed.

Admission criteria do exist in the form of the patients’ diagnosis and of a set minimum financial contribution.

They also require a written undertaking of regular visitations from the families, where applicable.

Their operating capital is generated from the following:

• A departmental subsidy per patient.

• A portion of any receiving patient’s disability grant.

• Financial contributions from eligible families.

• Donors and fund-raising.

• Gifts of food, clothing, bedding, etc.

Areyeng residence’s mission statement is to provide a home from home to persons who have found themselves, through various circumstances, in a position in life where none of us would like to be and to help and care for them with love and dignity.
