Man to appear in court for murder of teenage girl at South Hills

Silindile was found dead by her father Thembalakhe Dlamuka in the spare bedroom on the floor at about 6pm on the day.

MOFFAT VIEW police have apprehended a 30-year-old suspect for the murdered teenage girl Silindile Kunene (18) who was murdered at his home at Fever Tree Complex, a new development in South Hills on March 6.

Silindile was found dead by her father Thembalakhe Dlamuka in the spare bedroom on the floor at about 6pm on the day.

Silindile was home alone when the incident happened. Her mother Hlengiwe Kunene said her daughter was new in the area, having arrived two months earlier from KwaZulu-Natal. “She barely knew people around here.”

Moffat View spokesperson Capt Jeff Phora said an intensive investigation by Moffat View police led to the arrest of a 30-year-old man following the murder of the girl.

“Preliminary police investigation has revealed that the body of the girl was discovered in the bedroom lying on the floor with a stab wound. The suspect who is responsible for maintenance in the complex (Fever Tree) was arrested by police the following day (March 7) while on duty at the very same complex,” said Phora.

“Police are not ruling out the possibility of linking the suspect to similar incidents within the surrounding policing precincts. Police are appealing to communities to be vigilant and avoid welcoming strangers into their homes in order to minimise attacks,” Phora added.

Ward 57 councillor, Faeeza Chame visited the family on March 7 to express her condolences to the family and the community.

“We are really sorry for what happened. No parents need to bury their children. This is a sad day and I want to pass on my condolences. I will speak to Moffat View SAPS to increase police visibility in this area,” she said.

Moffat View SAPS Col Lesley Lloyd passed his condolences to the family and he noted that this place is not safe and vowed to increase police visibility in the area.

“The safety of people is important to us. Security is at risk here, but we will try work together with the community, the community policing forum and the police to bring safety to the area,” he said.

The community said at first there were break-ins in the area and they feel they are not safe at all. They pleaded with the colonel to deploy early-rise patrollers to protect them, especially in the morning when they go to work.

This is the second murder in a year. On March 2 last year, a 44-year-old woman was found stabbed to death at her home at the new Fever Tree Complex in South Hills.

The 30-year-old suspect is expected to appear before the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on March 11 facing a murder charge.
