Moffatview residents tired of dealing with problems alone

Residents of Moffatview say their area is in a mess and they are tired of having to deal with problems alone. The mayor's intervention is needed.

RESIDENTS of Moffatview are fed up with the overgrowth and makeshift bridge which holds sewerage static resulting in a terrible smell hanging in the air.

They feel their area is in mess and are tired of having to deal with problems alone.

The COURIER wrote a story about Moffatview residents’ dissatisfaction under headline ‘Residents fed up with this intolerable mess’ mid last year.

In 2018 residents complained about rubbish which residents dump in the bush opposite their block of flats as well as the bridge, which is actually a big tree branch. They felt that this made it easy for thugs to cross over the stream and come commit crimes in their section.

No improvement

Now residents demand an immediate response from the ward councillor, Faeeza Chame or mayor Herman Mashaba as they claim they have tried reaching out to him several times but their wishes didn’t materialise.

What made things worse is that the water under the bridge is static and when sewerage pipes burst the waste gets logged in by the so-called bridge.

Residents say the smell is unbearable and some residents are battling with sickness and this just adds to the dilemma.

They also claim that thugs have turned the Housing Development Project Site into their hideout spot and that some residents are dumping dead animals and spoiled products at the site.

A resident, who wished not to be named, said even a fence that was installed at the project site has been ripped apart by thugs.

“Children are not in a safe environment in this suburb of ours which is in a total mess. Our ward councillor doesn’t come to our aid. We have to see to it that we try and clean the area ourselves but most of the people living here are old people. Any assistance from the City or our councillor in resolving this problem will be highly appreciated,” said the resident.

Lack of maintenance

Residents claim in the past Pikitup used to be up to date with collecting plastic waste but that is not happening anymore.

“The trees on pavements were always maintained by City Parks. One could even see across the other side without being blocked by overgrown or hanging tree branches,” the resident said.

The COURIER contacted Mashaba’s office via email as residents wanted him to come and see for himself under which conditions they are living.

There was no concrete response given to COURIER as to when the mayor will come to a site visit.

The email the COURIER sent was routed to various officials in the mayor’s office but no one gave a clear response.

Chame said she can’t comment on the matter not until she goes out to see the site.
