Streets clean-up in Turffontein

Overgrown grass on sidewalks was cut and illegal dumping was removed. Some people were tasked to sweep the streets while others were responsible for tree pruning.

JOHANNESBURG City Parks and Ward 124 councillor Mongameli Mnyameni, along with Pikitup and Joburg Water, conducted a clean-up in Turffontein on March 15.

The clean-up took place from around 8am to 2pm starting at Rotunda Park. About 300 people from various entities participated in the clean-up, even local residents.

Overgrown grass on sidewalks was cut and illegal dumping was removed. Some people were tasked to sweep the streets while others were responsible for tree pruning.

Mnyameni came with his troops who provided an extra hand in helping in the clean-up.

“I’m happy about the response from City Parks. Even though what was done is just a drop in the ocean because the ward was not serviced since 2016. You can imagine such conditions and the small budget that City Parks got from JRA.

“It will never cover even a quarter of my ward. I hope they will continue to clean my ward. The community is tired of living in a forest, ” explained Mnyameni.

The clean-up was conducted in the following streets: Leonard, Main, Tramway, Turf Club, Donnelley, Van Hulsteyn, Lindhorst, Sheffield, Fraser, Bertha, Von Brandis, Leonard, Moffet, De Villiers, Bishop, Eloff, Turffontein, Park, High, Tully, Biccard, Von Garden, President Park, Paul Nel, Stanton, Ferreira, Dallas, Union, Hay, Diering, Great Britain, Andrews, Leo, Forest and Rotunda Park.

City Park’s stakeholder liaison Molefe Seale said this is an important initiative and streets need to be kept clean and smart.

“The purpose of this clean-up is that we need to address service delivery breakdowns even if it is outside our mandate like sidewalks cuttings. This is not the end of it. We will be doing the same in other wards. We are now looking at going to Ward 66.”
