Smash-and-grab victim fights back

The incident took place at the intersection of Pretoria and Shamrock roads, Primrose, Germiston.

AFTER two suspects involved in a smash-and-grab crime targeted a Glenvista resident who stopped at a red traffic light in Primrose recently, he fought back by chasing after them and firing at them.

The incident took place at the intersection of Pretoria and Shamrock roads, Primrose, Germiston.

Capt André de Jager, spokesperson for Ekurhuleni West Cluster SAPS said, “After the 37-year-old motorist stopped at the red traffic light with his window open and cellphone in his hand, he was approached by two suspects. One of the men grabbed his cellphone and they ran down Shamrock Road towards the Makause informal settlement.

“The motorist chased after them in his vehicle. He then got out of his vehicle and fired a warning shot at them. This is when one of the victims also pulled out a firearm and pointed it at the motorist, who then proceeded to shoot the suspect in the head,” said de Jager.

The 25-year-old suspect from Elandsfontein was transported to Tambo Memorial Hospital in Boksburg, under police guard, where he died later that day.

The motorist/victim’s cellphone was recovered and booked in as evidence, along with his firearm. The second suspect allegedly grabbed their firearm and ran into the informal settlement. He is still at large.

De Jager concluded that a case of attempted murder has been opened against the motorist/victim and is being investigated at Primrose Police Station.
