Joburg Market exit gate gets an upgrade

The market is one of the biggest fruit and vegetable distributors on the African continent.

JOBURG Market has upgraded its exit gate with a 24-hour security on standby on November 8.

On a daily basis there are about 10 000 vehicles and trucks entering Joburg Market.

The upgrade of the market’s exit gate was necessary for its customers to feel safe at the market.

Ward 57 councillor Faeeza Chame said this is a successful delivery in its purest form.

“As the first citizen of Ward 57, I was honoured to do the ribbon-cutting of the new boom gates that were installed.

“As a bonus to the traders and the shoppers, a beautiful garden was added. I would like to encourage communities to visit this market to experience what it has to offer,” she said.

The Joburg Market has been running since 1893 in the Newtown area.

In the early 1970s fresh produce became more popular and had grown to the point where the original owners were forced to find more suitable premises as their operation grew exceptionally.

In 1972 they moved to their current location in City Deep and the rest is history.
