UPDATE: Councillor Stuart Marais investigates overflowing sewerage manhole
They have recently brought it to the attention of the Comaro CHRONICLE, who in turn approached councillor Stuart Marais from Ward 54.
RESIDENTS of Winchester Hills have been complaining about an overflowing sewerage manhole on their pavement for the past 10 years.
They have recently brought it to the attention of the Comaro CHRONICLE, who in turn approached councillor Stuart Marais from Ward 54.
Marais met with the couple on December 2 to investigate the problem.
He has since been in touch with the local authorities in charge of attending to problems such as these.
On December 4, he sent the following comment to the Comaro CHRONICLE:
“I have been in contact with the manager from Johannesburg Water (JW), who indicated that he was not aware of the problem.
“He gave a committed undertaking that the inspectors will do an inspection of the surrounding area and the houses to determine which of them are illegally connected to outlets and sewer systems.
“This can take time, so the residents need to be patient since it also involves by-law enforcement.
“As the JW manager explained, in most cases the storm water enters the sewer system in private properties or developments where surface water run-off from roofs and paved areas is channelled and/or is allowed to discharge into sewer gullies.
“When staff comes across such cases, they arrange for compliance notices to be issued to the home owner or body corporate. It was confirmed that this would be done in near future,” Marais said.
