The killing of a police officer has left a deep sense of loss at Mondeor SAPS and in the community he served.

Mondeor SAPS Visible Policing unit member Sergeant Michael Masirheni Makhubele, affectionately known to colleagues and friends as ‘Khubs’ and ‘Big Mike’, was shot and killed by suspects following a robbery at an establishment in Chiawelo, Soweto on Friday, August 28.

Makhubele also served as the sector manager for Mondeor Sector Four, which includes Naturena and Meredale.

His death has left his colleagues, family and the community mourning the loss of a dedicated officer, a good father and a person who cared deeply for children. He was also well known to the children of his colleagues.

Makhubele was widely liked by colleagues and community members alike, earning respect for his service and maintaining a clean employment record with the SAPS.

A memorial service was held for Makhubele on Wednesday, September 2, and he is expected to be laid to rest this weekend in Limpopo.

The Mondeor CPF is appealing to members of the public for information that could assist investigators in identifying, locating and arresting those responsible for his murder.

The CPF has also circulated a wanted notice relating to the murder. According to the notice, the suspect is also wanted in connection with the robbery of Jazz Corner, during which a state service pistol was allegedly taken.

Mondeor CPF chairperson Mike Fontes condemned the attack and called on the community to assist investigators.

“We condemn any attacks on our police officers in the strongest possible terms and implore the SAPS and prosecuting authorities to bring his killers to justice to the fullest extent of the law,” said Fontes.

“We extend our condolences to the Makhubele family and all the members of Mondeor SAPS. We appeal to anyone with information that can assist in the arrest and conviction of the alleged suspect or suspects to come forward and share it with the investigating officer.”

Members of the public are urged not to approach or confront the wanted person.

As the investigation continues, Makhubele’s family, colleagues and the Mondeor community are left to remember an officer who dedicated himself to serving others.
