CCTV leads Fox Security to suspects after Bassonia house robbery
Security officers and police tracked four fleeing suspects across a local golf course following a break-in.
A community-funded CCTV system helped Fox Security officers track four men fleeing from a house robbery in Bassonia Koppie in the early hours of September 2.
According to Fox Security director Francois Jansen, the incident began at 00:55 when CCTV cameras monitored by Fox Security detected four suspicious men on the Glenvista Golf Course.
“Fox Tactical Response Units were immediately deployed to investigate,” Jansen said.
While officers were searching the area, a house robbery was reported in Bassonia Koppie. Jansen said officers subsequently spotted four suspects fleeing across the golf course in the direction of the incident.
“During the pursuit, the suspects opened fire on our Tactical Response Team,” he said.
The officers continued the pursuit and managed to arrest one man.
According to Jansen, a firearm and bags containing suspected stolen electronic items were recovered from the man.
The homeowners later identified the electronics as property taken during the robbery of the house.
The man was handed over to SAPS for further investigation.
Man fatally shot
Jansen said follow-up information then led officers to Turffontein, where a second man was located.
“During the ensuing incident, the man sustained fatal gunshot wounds,” Jansen said.
Jansen commended the Fox Tactical Response Team and Mondeor SAPS detectives for their swift response and professionalism. He also thanked members of the Mondeor Sector 1 CPF for their assistance.
Jansen encouraged Bassonia residents who have not yet joined the community-funded CCTV project to contact the Bassonia Community Forum leaders to learn how they can contribute.
“CCTV cameras do work and they have proven themselves over and over again in helping to improve community safety and security,” says Jansen.
“The strength of this project depends on all of us working together. Every resident who gets involved makes a difference and helps us build a safer Bassonia for everyone.”
