Mayor condemns New Year’s shooting

“Our deepest sympathy goes to the people who were shot and injured and their families, as well as everybody involved.” - executive mayor Geoffrey Makhubo.

THE City of Johannesburg’s executive mayor councillor Geoffrey Makhubo, on behalf of the City, condemns in the strongest terms the acts of violence and crime that occurred at the 2019 City of Joburg New Year’s Eve Countdown at Mary Fitzgerald Square in Newtown in the early hours of January 1.

“The shocking and appalling behaviour by an unknown person who had a gun and opened fire at an outdoor festival and injured 11 spectators will not be tolerated.

“We view this attack on innocent people in the most serious light,” said Makhubo.

“Our deepest sympathy goes to the people who were shot and injured and their families, as well as everybody involved. We are currently not in the position to confirm what may have motivated the shooter to commit this terrible act, however, this is still an active and ongoing investigation.

“As soon as we can, we will share more information. We would like to encourage members of the public to come forward with any information that may be relevant to the shooting.

“We would also like to take this opportunity to thank the Johannesburg Emergency Services (EMS), the South African Police Services (SAPS) and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) for acting swiftly in dispatching the injured people to various hospitals,” he said.
