WATCH: Lesufi congratulates Class of 2020

Out of 15 Gauteng districts, Joburg South was 13th, with a 79.9 per cent pass rate.

The MEC of Education in the Gauteng Province, Panyaza Lesufi, on February 24 in Ormonde paid tribute to the education officials who lost their lives due to Covid-19, dedicating the performance of the Class of 2020 to the sacrifices made by the late officials.

“Unfortunately, we lost 34 educators. I want to dedicate these results to the 34 educators who sacrificed their lives so that our children can get an education and pass. We also lost 18 department officials,” the MEC said.

At an official event to announce the overall results of the 2020 Grade 12 Exams in Gauteng and to reward the province’s top achievers, Lesufi commended the 110 184 matriculants for achieving a pass rate of 83.8 per cent – a 3.5 per cent reduction from the province’s performance in 2019. This places Gauteng in the second position nationally.

Lesufi said the province was proud of the efforts of the Class of 2020, especially during these challenging times.

“We congratulate the learners for their resilience, dedication and hard work displayed during this pandemic and wish them well in their future endeavours. We recommit that the top three achievers from all township schools will be awarded a four-year bursary to a higher education institution of their choice,” he said.

The results were the culmination of a collective effort of all Gauteng education stakeholders.

“I am proud that our educators, our officials and indeed the entire leadership gave us the support needed. “Despite being faced with the severe disruptions to teaching and learning brought about by the pandemic, the Class of 2020 showed resilience and delivered.

“We might accept that our results declined by 3.5 per cent, but the reality is that in the history of our province, and in the history of our country, no single province has made 92 000 learners pass matric – and more than 45 000 to get bachelor’s degree passes to go to a university of their choice,” Lesufi said.

Gauteng has once again, this year, achieved significant milestones in respect of national performance. Some of those milestones include the quality of passes, progressed learners, spatial distribution, gender, achievement in mathematics and science, achievement in language, and the number of university endorsements.
