Riley’s spine is in dire need of surgery

Riley Nauschutz's severe scoliosis needs corrective surgery, which costs around R1-million.

Riley Nauschutz, a 12-year-old girl, is in dire need of corrective spinal surgery due to a severe case of scoliosis.

While a normal spine from the front would have no curvature, Riley’s spine had developed two severe curvatures at 104 and 100 degrees respectively. Her case was diagnosed in January.

For young Riley, the condition of her spine is not only one of severe discomfort and pain, but also embarrassment.

Until recently, she hid her deformity from the world. She is forced to walk with a gait as the right side of her body continues to shrink due to scoliosis.

The severity of her condition increased by between 20 and 30 degrees within three months.

To correct her spine, Riley requires several procedures, which include fusions and spinal corrections. Doctors informed Riley’s family that the procedure would cost approximately R1-million. Riley’s family is in dire need of assistance to provide Riley with the surgeries that she needs to save her life.

The family is asking for the generosity of the community to help fund this operation.
