SMSA deploys infection defence for stadiums

Active air disinfection for safer indoor spaces at stadiums in the south.

ECA Technologies, the official disinfection partner of Stadium Management South Africa (SMSA), implements active air disinfection for safer indoor spaces against Covid-19 and other infectious diseases.

Active air disinfection featuring PHI technology is the Industry’s first indoor air purification device to be evaluated against aerosolized SARS-CoV-2 viruses and proven to inactivate 99.96% of the environments air and surfaces.

FNB stadium joins other worldwide premier facilities in deploying likely the most important Covid-19 mitigation program, protecting the indoor air space with PHI technology leading stadium management.

SMSA is responsible for the management and operations of the historic Orlando and Dobsonville, Rand Stadium and the FNB Stadium, on behalf of the City of Johannesburg.

The iconic FNB stadium has been host to major events such as the very first FIFA World Cup final to be held on African soil.

SMSA after lengthy investigations into best approaches to facilitate safety and public health interventions in light of the Covid-19 pandemic has teamed up with ECA Technologies, a proudly South African company that have been providing innovative hygiene and microbial control solutions to the industry for over ten years.

SMSA invested in a sustainable solution as an added layer of enhanced Covid-19 protocols in managing Covid-19 potential exposure as part of existing event safety protocols at the FNB Stadium.

Mark Williams, managing director of ECA technologies said, “We couldn’t have found a better partner to launch the PHI active air disinfection program with.

“I remember being at this stadium as a young man for the Bafana Bafana African Cup of Nations triumph and to be the team that now ensures parts of this iconic venue are safe for reopening is a notable achievement in our company’s track record for innovation and the fight against infection,” said Williams.

“In addition to the long-term objectives of SMSA, we are also proud to contribute to a safe environment for the upcoming British and Irish Lions Tests”

Bertie Grobbelaar, CEO SMSA said, “Once it became apparent to us that this pandemic was not just about hand and surface hygiene, we knew we had to step up beyond just the basic mandated guidelines.

“We wanted to go above and beyond in the fight against Covid-19 and protecting our building occupants. We compared the ECA Technologies solution PHI to what was available in the market place and we knew it was a no-brainer.

“The FNB Stadium is and will continue to be an industry-leading facility, now with world-class indoor air safety and truly active infection defence. The long-term objective is to provide an additional layer of protection in the utilization of the venue to our long-standing stadia partners and event organizers at the venues we manage.

“The ECA Technologies disinfection will be rolled out in time for the 2021/2022 Premier Soccer League Season and the upcoming British and Irish Lions Tests. We are looking at expanding this technology to the other venues we manage in the near future.”
