WATCH: Southerners on why they make their mark

All of the local voting stations opened in time to receive the masses of residents who are ready to cast their ballot.

Residents in the south of Johannesburg have gone to the polls to vote for the party and candidate councillor they believe will help sort out their service delivery problems in the South.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame encourages people to come and vote for the party of their choice.

People have to social distance in the already long queues, sanitise and wear a mask at all times.

Though there are new norms to voting brought forth by the global pandemic, there are certain norms that remain unchanged, which include the process of voting. In case you might have forgotten or you are a first-time voter., here is a little guide on how voting works on Election Day.

The IEC says Covid protocols will be in place when South Africans vote in the Local Government Elections today.

They have urged voters to bring their own pens, although a pen will be available in every booth that will be sanitised after every vote.

Residents are reminded that all voting stations will remain open until 21:00 tonight.

Lucky Thusi, COURIER’s reporter visited different voting stations in the South to ask residents why it is important for them to put their mark on the ballots.

Thami Tshongwe is expecting more service delivery especially when it comes to water and electricity in Ward 57.
Nthabeleng Mohai and Alicia Mohai we need change especially employment in this ward. They’ve just voted at Southern Suburb Bowling Club.
Vezokuhle Nala just voted and he said he needs a cleaner Johannesburg, please.
Thobeka Nzimande just voted and she wants job creation in the Ward.
Maaiz van der Nest is only 2 years old but he ‘voted’ at Southern Suburb Bowling Club
