Alberton neighbourhood watch assists SAPS during a drug seizure

Brackendowns SAPS recently made several arrests after being helped by six entities to fight drug related crimes in the greater Alberton.

SAPS and other local security agencies joined forces with the AfriForum neighbourhood watch in Alberton on July 12 in a fight to stop drug trafficking.

The local agencies included Brackendowns SAPS, Brackendowns CPF, EMPD, Fidelity ADT, Home Affairs: Immigration and React24 Security.

Drugs were found during the special operation along JG Strijdom Road and numerous people were arrested.

AfriForum’s district coordinator for the East Rand, Petrus Coetzee, said that successes like these are the foundation for a community to live peacefully and build their future together.

The specialist training that neighbourhood watch members received enabled good co-operation with SAPS and other role players.

“AfriForum’s Alberton neighbourhood watch makes a difference in their community. This successful operation once again emphasised the importance of co-operation and proactive action in the fight against crime,” Coetzee said.

According to the AfriForum’s Alberton leader, Louis van Aswegen, they cannot allow criminals to do as they please. Therefore, they will continue to fight criminal activities in the community through discipline, legal- and well-planned actions.

“We are grateful that the watch in Alberton is growing from strength to strength. It is a sacrifice and a decision made by volunteers to make their community safer for everyone who lives there,” van Aswegen concluded.
