City Power technician dies in the line of duty
Kallie van Vuuren was helping the people of Johannesburg when he met his untimely death.
The Environment and Infrastructure Services Department (EISD) is saddened by the passing of a City Power technician in the line of duty on July 28.
Kallie van Vuuren was responding to an outage in Wilropark when he was electrocuted tracing a cable fault in Molopo Street. Paramedics declared him dead on the scene after swiftly arriving shortly after the incident.
“My heart breaks for van Vuuren and his family. It is utterly devastating to lose someone in the line of duty like this. When all he was trying to do was ensure the people of Johannesburg have basic services,” MMC for EISD Michael Sun said.
Van Vuuren served the people of Johannesburg for 20 years as a technician with a specific focus on restoring power in large-scale outages.
“His colleagues say he was a meticulous and diligent artisan that always strived for absolute perfection. The entire City Power team is devastated by this incident and a full-scale investigation will be launched to find out the exact circumstances of this untimely death,” noted Sun.
He is survived by his wife and two children. City Power officials will be visiting the family on August 5.
