Community gets together to clean Gatwick Park

Ward 106 committee is looking at possible ways of getting Gatwick Park to be used more professionally and practically.

The Gatwick Park Circle in Raceview can now be a place where locals can be physically active and spend time with friends and family following a clean-up.

Community members came together to clean this recreational park. The clean-up comprised grass cutting and litter picking.

Collins Kanhiwa, Malcolm Moriarty and Nicolene Haasbroek.

“I contacted the head of the parks department on numerous occasions, but because of machinery that has broken down, they have put it off for about four weeks. Eventually, the HOD did arrange for grass cutting. The community wanted to get involved and the clean-up has succeeded to unite the community,” explained Ward 106 Clr Tim Denny.

He said the ultimate problem is a lack of maintenance and lack of funds due to the interim budget being blocked.
Denny reiterated that the community event, which was made possible by Andrew from Macy’s SPAR, Meat World Alberton, Oasis Water, Fox Security and Metal Chip Machinery, proved to be a major success.

Hendrik Geffen, Damien Pasley and Rudi van Niekerk of Fox Security.

“We are also looking at ways of using Gatwick Park more professionally and practically, instead of letting it go into wrack and ruin. We need more focus on Gatwick because it services the whole of Alberton and Lance Botha of Ward 106 will take it up as his project,” he said.

During the clean up they also attended to long grass.
