Man nabbed for theft under false pretences

The victim saw an advert on social media for a Ford Fiesta for sale for R45 000.

Junior Bongane Mayisela (29) was sentenced to two years imprisonment on March 9 after committing theft under false pretences.

According to the Mondeor SAPS spokesperson, Captain Nokulunga Dube, on July 26, 2022, the victim saw an advert on social media for a Ford Fiesta for sale for R45 000.

“The victim contacted the accused about the purchase. She was convinced to deposit the money and told the delivery would happen after that. After she paid the money, the accused told her that the car had been sold to another buyer and that she would be refunded. She was shown a fake message from the bank that her money was back in her account. She consulted the bank and was told that the message was a scam.

“Through the hard work and dedication of the Mondeor SAPS detectives, the crime was investigated, the accused was traced, and arrested in Daveyton,” said Dube.

Dube said the Mondeor SAPS station commander, Colonel JJ Bezuidenhoudt, applauded the members for their hard work and warned the community not to become the victims of online scams.

“He urged the residents to be cautious and verify all information when it comes to purchasing a vehicle or any goods from an advertisement on social media,” said Dube.
