Glenvista High learners attend youth democracy seminar
The seminar gave the learners a chance to engage with national leaders and diplomats while exploring the importance of active citizenship, good governance and leadership.
Selected learners in grades 10 to 12 from Glenvista High School recently had the opportunity to attend the Democracy, Governance and Diplomacy Youth Seminar hosted by the Department of International Relations and Cooperation (DIRCO) at the Union Buildings in Pretoria.
The seminar formed part of the Youth Month celebrations and also marked 30 years of South Africa’s Constitution.
The event brought together government leaders, diplomats, young people and key stakeholders to discuss democratic governance, youth empowerment and the role of young people in shaping the country’s future.
Learners were exposed to important discussions on leadership, active citizenship, good governance and diplomacy.

The seminar encouraged young people to take part in strengthening democracy and building a prosperous future for South Africa.
The programme was opened by Ambassador Maud Dlomo, followed by a Youth Panel discussion.
Panellists explored the role of young people in international relations, the contribution of South African youth to democracy, challenges facing young people, including issues highlighted by the Fees Must Fall movement, and opportunities created by emerging technologies and economic transformation.
A Minister’s Panel, led by Minister Ronald Lamola and Deputy Minister Alvin Botes, engaged participants on topics such as democracy, governance, peace diplomacy, shared prosperity and the importance of sovereign agency. Members of the diplomatic community also contributed to these discussions.

Among the diplomats in attendance was Ambassador Hanan Jarrar, who joined fellow members of the diplomatic corps at the seminar held at the OR Tambo Building in Pretoria.
The event highlighted the importance of youth participation in democratic processes and aimed to strengthen trust in public institutions across Southern Africa.
For the Glenvista High learners, the seminar provided valuable insight into governance, diplomacy and the significant role that young people can play in shaping the future of democracy.
