Quick response by SAPS prevents cash-in-transit heist in Eden Park

The provincial commissioner in Gauteng, Elias Mawela, thanked the public for helping them swiftly fight crime after a local tipped off the police about a cash-in-transit supposed to take place on August 12 in Eden Park.

Because of their efforts to combat robberies, most notably cash-in-transits, the police detained five suspects for conspiracy to commit a cash-in-transit (CIT) robbery on August 12.

The team, which included members from Gauteng Traffic, the SAPS Tactical Response Team, the JMPD K9 Unit, the EMPD Specialised Task Team, the Johannesburg Flying Squad, and Guerilla Tactical Services, executed intelligence-driven information about suspects preparing a CIT robbery in Eden Park.

After locating the hide-out, they carried out a takedown operation.

According to provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi, five suspects were found in possession of two rifles, a pistol and ammunition in Eden Park. The firearms were unlicensed. A further search led to the recovery of two vehicles established as hijacked.

“The team went to the second hide-out in Alberton and found one vehicle reported as hijacked. The five suspects were arrested and charged with conspiracy to commit armed robbery, possession of unlicensed firearms and ammunition and possession of hijacked vehicles,” said Nevhuhulwi.

The provincial commissioner of the police in Gauteng, Lieutenant Elias Mawela, praised the teams for their quick action. He has also thanked the community for their participation in the fight against crime by reporting criminal activity and giving the police tip-offs.
