Union Rugby Club gets Ellis Park experience

Joburg south club attends Lions-hosted event in celebration of grassroots rugby.

It was a weekend of grassroots rugby and community spirit as the Lions Rugby club hosted a multi-club event on April 26, which brought teams together from across Johannesburg.

Union Rugby Club, based in Kibler Park, attended the event, and their U8 team played a tag rugby match. The day kicked off with the fields officially opened by U8 Tag rugby, giving the youngest players a chance to showcase their skills and set the tone for the event.

From there, clubs from all over took to the field in a full schedule of matches that ran throughout the day. The turnout and atmosphere reflected the growing love for the game at club level. Clubs from all over got together and had tremendous fun.

There was camaraderie between players, coaches, and families on the sidelines. A highlight of the weekend came for Union Rugby Club, who earned the opportunity to play at Ellis Park.

The experience gave players a taste of one of South Africa’s most iconic stadiums and created a memorable moment for the club. The Lions-hosted event was praised for creating a platform that combines development, competition, and enjoyment for players of all ages.

With tag rugby opening proceedings and senior clubs closing out the day, the festival underscored the pathway from grassroots to the big stage.
