Cable thief jailed for 15 years after South Hills arrest
A 31-year-old man was sentenced to 15 years' direct imprisonment after being convicted of tampering with essential infrastructure.
Wanda Mngomezulu (31) must serve 15 years in direct imprisonment after being convicted of tampering with essential infrastructure by the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on August 31.
The incident occurred on December 12, 2025, at around 18:00, when members of Calvin and Family Security were patrolling in South Hills.
While on patrol, the security officers noticed a man on a stepladder at a house on Frankfort Street. He was allegedly on an electricity pole, using pliers to cut copper electricity cables.
Moffat View SAPS officers and City Power officials were called to the scene. The man was arrested and charged with tampering with essential infrastructure.
Police found a stepladder, screwdrivers, two plugs, a spade and a black bag in his possession.
Moffat View SAPS congratulated the investigating officer, Detective Constable Mbaseni, on securing the conviction.
Mngomezulu was also declared unfit to possess a firearm.
