Bassonia man accused of mother’s murder awaits psychiatric evaluation
James Gibson faces two additional charges in a separate matter as his murder case continues in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court.
James Gibson (29), the man accused of murdering his mother, Celeste Antiga (57), is facing two additional charges in a separate matter.
Gibson appeared in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court yesterday before Magistrate Vele, where charges of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm (GBH) and contravening a domestic violence order were added to the matter.
The charges originate from a district court case in which Gibson had previously appeared.
The matters were postponed to October 29, when they are expected to be consolidated.
In the murder case, investigations are continuing, with the police still awaiting the crime-scene photo album and post-mortem report.
Gibson is also expected to undergo a psychiatric evaluation in connection with the other charges. He is reportedly number 85 on the list awaiting bed allocation for the assessment.
Alleged murder
Gibson faces a Schedule 6 murder charge following the death of Antiga, who died from injuries allegedly sustained at her Bassonia home.
According to police, the incident occurred at about 19:10 on July 14 at a home in Blouklip Avenue, Bassonia.
Antiga was allegedly found unconscious and lying in a pool of blood after sustaining severe injuries to her upper body.
She was taken to hospital for medical treatment but died from her injuries the following day, July 15.
Gibson allegedly fled the scene following the incident and remained at large for several days.
Police arrested him on July 21. He was taken into custody and detained at Mondeor Police Station.
The investigation into the circumstances surrounding Antiga’s death is ongoing, with the outstanding documentation expected to form part of the State’s case.
Gibson remains in custody and is expected to appear again in the Booysens Magistrate’s Court on October 29.
