Local entertainer believes his entertainment is pure

When Chris performs, he’s stage name is Stephaney,

Entertainment always puts you in different situations, and criticism strengthened me.

This phrase perfectly describes Chris Retief.

Chris said entertaining was a hobby he began 20 years ago. He performed wherever he was given a chance and it grew until today where he may be found in clubs, at baby showers and at parties of all kinds.

“My performances vary depending on the show. I have 350 costumes and each song I perform has its own costume. This is pure entertainment. I love and enjoy what I do. I charge depending on how long the show lasts, but I usually charge R850 per show. I usually perform for about 45 minutes to an hour, involving seven costumes.

“I usually perform old songs and dress in the 1950s and 1960s costumes,” said Chris.

The entertainer revealed to the Comaro Chronicle that when he performs, his stage name is Stephaney.

“When I first started, it wasn’t easy and I used to dwell on that because I used to get criticised for being gay, especially when I performed in front of straight people. I worked on it and now I’m not afraid to perform in front of them.

“As gay people, we must always fight to be accepted. People are always saying negative things about us.”

Chris encourages anyone to follow their instinct and do what they want.

“Learn from those who have done or are doing what you want to do, or who represent the people you want to emulate. Give everything you have.”

Chris thanked his husband, family, friends and everyone who supported him.

“I am grateful for their support and I am very fortunate.”

Besides being an entertainer, Chris likes catering, cooking and decor. He is a bartender and is married.
