South Hills power outage update

City Power apologises to some residents around South Hills who had intermittent power supply for the past four days, due to multiple cable faults.

Spokesperson Isaac Mangena said there was a fault on one of the terminations on the run which was repaired and power restored. A day after restoration the distributor tripped again and the fault was traced to a blown-up Ring Main Unit (RMU).

“Temporary repairs which include the bypassing of the RMU were effected last night and power was restored. A little while after restoration, the power tripped again. Operators were dispatched and upon investigation, it was discovered that there was a further fault on the distributor.”

“The fault was traced to a spur cable or radial feed which means that power cannot be restored until the fault is repaired. This outage affects at least five load centres supplying the Fever Tree complex and the surrounding areas in South Hills,” he said.

Mangena said Plant Test team has been dispatched and is on-site busy with the fault location. Once the fault is located excavations will begin to expose and repair the cable fault.

“Unfortunately, we do not have ETR at the moment and can only provide it once the fault has been located”

City Power appeal for patience and cooperation from the residents as we work hard to resolve this outage. Any disruptions including protests may delay the repairs and restorations, and we won’t hesitate to pull the teams out if their safety is not guaranteed.

“We are working with the councillor and community leaders to ensure the work is not disrupted,” added Mangena.

Customers will be updated on the progress through City Power’s Twitter and on councillors’ WhatsApp groups.
