South Hill residents host Annual Addiction Awareness Campaign
The annual awareness event connected residents with recovery organisations, health services and rehabilitation support while encouraging people to seek help without stigma.
Residents gathered at the South Hill Recreation Centre on September 12 for the annual Addiction Awareness Campaign. Organised by Meals on Wheels Community Services Caregivers alongside the City of Johannesburg and the Gauteng Provincial Government, the event ran under the theme ‘You are not alone. Help, hope and support start here’.
The campaign focused on raising awareness around different forms of addiction and providing access to support services.
Focus on recovery and support
Community members attended presentations by a wide range of organisations including Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous, Love and Sex Addicts Anonymous, Business Debtors Anonymous, Debtors Anonymous, Gamblers Anonymous, and Overeaters Anonymous, alongside discussions on gangsterism, human trafficking, and rehabilitation opportunities.

Officials from the Department of Correctional Services also engaged with the community.
A pop-up clinic was set up on site, offering health screenings and referrals, while entertainment and refreshments were served throughout the day.
Organisers said the campaign aimed to break the stigma around addiction, educate families, and connect those struggling to long-term support and rehabilitation pathways.
The event was supported by numerous partners, including SADA, SOJO, SANCA Central Rand, and The Butterfly Foundation, who exhibited and offered counselling.
