The emergence of informal settlements in Mondeor poses security risk

With homelessness on the rise, more and more people are settling in undesignated places

In recent months, the rising informal settlements in the Mondeor area have been a concern for many residents.

A Mondeor resident reached out to the Comaro Chronicle newspaper, voicing how the sudden emergence of an informal settlement has become a security concern.

The informal settlement is in a veld in a low-lying area surrounded by houses and complexes in the high-lying area, allowing for easy access to the properties.

“My family and I have lived here for many years, and this is a first. My wife and I live alone and are in our old age. We are very concerned for our safety because we have no information about those who have occupied the land,” explained the resident.

According to Ward 54 Clr Stuart Marais, the Mondeor SAPS is investigating the issue.

The Mondeor SAPS station commander, Colonel JJ Bezuidenhoudt, said, “The premises were visited with the complainant. It was established that one person is staying in the veld for some time. This matter will receive attention with the help of the relevant authorities.”
