Southdale SANBS encourages the public to save lives by donating blood

The donor centre is proud of all its donors for repeatedly giving a part of themselves to save lives.

The South African National Blood Service (SANBS) donor centre in Southdale, Johannesburg south, encourages the community to donate blood.

SANBS provides an essential service to the healthcare system of South Africa.

Janine Hall, a teacher at Meredale Primary School, is a regular donor at the Southdale centre. She started donating blood at 18 when in varsity. She began donating because her father was a donor, and now she does it in his honour.

Janine Hall is a regular donor at the centre.

Hall has thus far donated 235 units. For the first 150 units, she donated whole blood.

“As a regular donor, I was asked to switch to plasma, so instead of donating every 56 days, I donate every 14 days, and instead of it taking 15 minutes, it takes about an hour,” said Hall.

She is encouraged by two quotes displayed on the wall in the centre: “You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give” by Kahlil Gibran, The Prophet, and “The most truly generous persons are those who give silently without hope of praise or reward” by Carol Ryrie Brink.

Morgan Mbayela is also a regular donor at the centre and believes in doing good for others. Hearing about the difference his donation makes has encouraged Mbayela to donate often. He has made 201 donations since he first started donating.

“It is encouraging to know my donations are saving the lives of many. Therefore, I ensure I donate regularly. I started with whole blood, but donate platelets now,” highlights Mbayela.
