WATCH: Eid Al Fitre celebration held in Mulbarton

Eid begins when Ramadan ends.

Masjid Nusaybah hosted Eidgah for Johannesburg South in Mulbarton on April 11.

This was just after the end of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Islamic calendar, which follows a lunar cycle.

Eid al-Fitr is the day of celebration for Muslims and marks the culmination of a month of self-restraint and spiritual exertion known as Ramadan. It’s a day of joy, born from the profound sense of fulfilment attained through adhering to the sacred injunctions prescribed during Ramadan.

Ml Ahmed Bhyat said they were all fasting, also the children willingly fasted.

“The purpose is gratitude and to develop self-restraint. If you can restrain from food and drinking during fasting, then abstaining from that which is inherently evil and harmful becomes more attainable,” he said.

He also mentioned that Ramadan is a month of the Quran, where they recite it in its entirety.

“The Quran which is over 1 400 years old, was revealed over 23 years to Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) and the revelation commenced in the month of Ramadan.

“Day of Eid is a day of joy, happiness and fulfilment and a gift from Allah. A beautiful prophetic narration explains that on the morning of Eid, Allah dispatches angels to every town, urging followers of Prophet Muhammad (Peace be upon him) to seek Allah’s boundless mercy and forgiveness.

“Although on this day we eat and drink, there are restrictions and alcohol is forbidden. In other Arab countries, they celebrated Eid yesterday, we heard that there was an airstrike on the day and we are with the people of Palestine,” he said.
