Help the Miss Turffontein pageant pad drive

The pageant encourages the public to work towards a world where menstruation is no longer a barrier to education and opportunities.

Miss Turffontein is doing a pad drive to help girls in need in Turffontein and the surrounding area.

Period poverty is the lack of access to sanitary products; this is an issue that five out of 10 women are facing.

The lack of access to sanitary products forces one to use unhygienic materials like rags, cloth, tissues or even newspapers, leading to health complications like infections.

Not having sanitary products can lead to; absenteeism from school or work, limited participation in social and economic activities, an increased risk of health problems and emotional distress and shame.

The pageant organisers highlighted that the community must recognise period poverty as a critical issue while prioritising the dignity and well-being of women who can’t afford sanitary products.
