New Beginnings group spreads joy with handmade teddy bears for kids
New Beginnings made teddy bears for the children at the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.
There is nothing more rewarding than spreading love and joy, which is what the New Beginnings group is all about.
Marla Sukraj and New Beginnings ladies made teddy bears for the children in Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital’s pediatric ward and kids with cancer-related symptoms.
Besides the teddies, the children also received snacks.
The ladies of New Beginnings attend arts and crafts classes at the Kibler Park Recreation Centre, headed up by Sukraj, also on the centre’s committee.
The ladies make handy crafts out of recycled materials. They began knitting and stuffing teddy bears for charity when Sukraj decided to design a new teddy for the group to make and give to kids at the hospital.

Sukraj spoke about the importance of the group of ladies getting together and the outcomes of what they make and hand out.
“These ladies love doing our arts and crafts projects. It helps with their motor skills and allows them to have a social group of friends. We are like a family,” said Sukraj.
“We made the teddy bears as a group effort with only donations and contributions from the ladies. Our projects help people and spread joy,” she said.
