Illegal buildings and backrooms in Ward 57

Bylaws are being flouted by these illegal buildings.

Ward 57 Clr Faeeza Chame is alarmed by the rampant illegal constructions mushrooming across the ward.

She said homeowners build backrooms without approved plans, flouting bylaws and straining water and electricity resources.

She noted key concerns, include inadequate building inspectors, lack of follow-ups and enforcement, and bribery allegations, compromising accountability.

The consequences are overburdened utilities, safety risks, and degraded living conditions.

She demands the city to increase its building inspectors’ capacity, impose stringent fines on perpetrators, demolish illegal structures and protect our communities.

“Report illegal constructions to the authorities. Make sure you get a reference number to keep them accountable. Unauthorised constructions plague Ward 57, straining resources and risking safety,” she said.
