South Hills church celebrates World Day of the Poor

Catholic Church aims to keep providing food for the community

Our Lady Fatima Catholic Church in South Hills celebrated World Day of the Poor by making sandwiches and handing them out to those in need in the community.

The church provided 150 sandwiches. The church has regular feeding schemes and soup kitchens that feed the community that is ravaged by poverty and a lack of job opportunities.

The church provides a key service, and the community is very appreciative of it.

Deacon Walter Middleton spoke about the importance of celebrating World Day of the Poor.

“’World Day of the Poor was instituted by Pope Francis eight years ago in an attempt to tackle the issue of world hunger. We as a church want to perpetuate that initiative and eradicate hunger in our community,” said Middleton.

A major part of the funding for the sandwiches was provided by Grassroots Heroes International.
