N1 South closed after truck crash and diesel spillage

Traffic at a standstill as authorities work to clear wreckage and contain fuel spill on busy highway

A serious crash involving two trucks has led to the complete closure of the N1 South before Maraisburg Road on May 12.

According to Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) spokesperson Xolani Fihla, one of the trucks overturned, spilling diesel onto the road. Three people sustained slight injuries in the accident.

“All lanes on the N1 South before Maraisburg Road are currently closed to traffic,” said Fihla. “This full closure is necessary to allow emergency personnel to manage the scene safely and to clear both the overturned truck and the diesel spillage.”

Fihla explained that the incident initially affected three lanes, but as the situation worsened, a full closure had to be implemented.

“Vehicles are currently being diverted at Gordon Road, and motorists can expect significant congestion along the N1 South and surrounding areas,” he said.

JMPD and emergency services remain on the scene.

Fihla said the estimated time for clearing the scene and reopening the road is approximately four hours.

“We strongly advise motorists to avoid the N1 South near Maraisburg entirely. Please make use of alternative routes such as 14th Avenue and Hendrick Potgieter Road,” said Fihla.

He added that motorists using alternative routes should exercise extreme patience and caution, as those roads are also experiencing heavier than usual traffic volumes.

Fihla urged drivers to remain alert and follow instructions from officers on site.
