R50k donation to Nkosi’s Haven
This generous contribution highlights the power of the community and the club’s commitment to social responsibility.
The Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club (JHAC) turned race-day energy into real-world impact by making a R50,000 donation to Nkosi’s Haven, a Johannesburg home that cares for mothers and children affected by HIV and Aids.
The cheque was presented to the organisation on May 24.
The gift results from the sold-out second edition of the Johannesburg City Marathon, held on March 30. A record 4 000 runners crossed the start line with 1 000 in the 42.2 km, 1 300 in the 21.1 km and 1 700 in the 10km. Their entry-form donations tallied R14 485 and JHAC decided to top this up to reach the impressive R50 000 milestone.
Nkosi’s Haven, named after Aids activist Nkosi Johnson, offers a safe, nurturing home and essential services to women and children in need. The organisation is close to the Johannesburg Harriers’ hearts, and in 2024, members generously donated Christmas gifts to each child at Nkosi’s Haven.

Chairperson of the Johannesburg Harriers Athletic Club, Donovan Goliath said: “On behalf of our race organising committee, I’d like to thank every runner who ticked the ‘donate’ box, our partner, the City of Johannesburg, and our sponsors Thatendam Engineering, JP Engineering, Mercedes-Benz (Motus), aQuellè and Mageu Number 1 as well as the Kibler Park community. And, of course, a massive thank you to all JHAC club members who gave up family time to make race week magical.”
Acting director: Sport and Recreation Community Development City of Johannesburg, Karen du Plessis said: “We are proud to be associated with a partnership that not only showcased our city to the broader running community but also promoted a healthy lifestyle and encouraged active citizenry among our residents.
Events such as these generate economic benefits for our communities and contribute to building a vibrant and inclusive city.
“We are equally proud of the Club’s commitment to social responsibility. The donation to Nkosi’s Haven is a commendable gesture that reflects the spirit of giving back and addressing the social needs of our communities. We are honoured to be part of a partnership that drives such meaningful impact.”

Councilor Matsobane Sekhu added: “It is inspiring to see a running club look beyond the finish line and extend a helping hand where it’s needed most.
“As a long-time supporter of Nkosi Haven and JHAC, I am proud to witness this meaningful partnership. The funds donated will undoubtedly make a significant difference in the lives of the children and mothers who rely on the sanctuary and care provided by Nkosi Haven. I encourage other community organisations to follow their lead.”
