WATCH: Zama zamas wreak havoc on roads and overpass near Gold Reef City
Dangerous holes left in critical M1 North route as councillor calls for urgent action from SAPS and JRA.
The roads and overpass outside Gold Reef City in Crown Gardens, Johannesburg, have been severely vandalised by illegal miners, known as zama zamas, who are digging for access to old mining tunnels beneath the M1 North highway.
Bricks covering the overpass have been removed, leaving a dangerous gaping hole, while surrounding infrastructure at Northern Parkway and Data Crescent has also suffered extensive damage.
According to Ward 54 Clr Stuart Marais, the Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) has made efforts to repair the damage, but these have fallen short.

“The JRA has been here but hasn’t done a good job. They just threw sand over the holes. The sand is loose, and anyone can dig it up again,” said Marais.
The councillor filmed a video at the site to draw attention to the extent of the destruction and has since called for increased law enforcement presence in the area. He’s urging both the SAPS and the JRA to take stronger action to secure the site and prevent further harm.

“The SAPS needs to take a proactive approach. We need regular patrols and proper monitoring to stop these illegal activities,” said Marais.
The M1 North overpass is a critical route for many areas in Johannesburg South. If its structural integrity is compromised, it could be closed, causing serious disruption for commuters.
SAPS spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kgomotso Mothibi confirmed the police are aware of the situation.

“We will increase our presence in the Joburg South area and work with the community to identify and apprehend those responsible. We believe many of these individuals reside near their mining sites, so patrols will focus on these known hotspots. We will not tolerate any criminal activity,” said Mothibi.

Zama zamas are believed to be living in the bushy areas surrounding the exterior of Gold Reef City. Authorities are being urged to adopt a coordinated, comprehensive strategy to address the issue.
By working together, law enforcement and local residents can help prevent further destruction and ensure the safety of public infrastructure.
