WATCH: KNRA and JCPZ celebrate Arbor Day with tree planting and nature conservation

A successful Arbor Day celebration.

The Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve Association (KNRA) partnered with Johannesburg City Parks and Zoo (JCPZ) on September 13 to celebrate Arbor Day under the theme ‘greening our community’.

The event brought together 60 learners from Molalatladi Primary School and Sekwati Primary School for tree planting, education, and awareness activities, emphasising the importance of tree conservation and ecological balance.

KNRA, a volunteer NPO dedicated to protecting the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve, supported tree planting and conservation efforts during the celebration.

JCPZ, led by conservation specialist Tumi Shoba, hosted the event, showcasing exhibitions on the vital role trees play in maintaining ecological harmony.

Hands-on experiments were also conducted through JCPZ’s Science on the Move programme.

The Arbor Day event featured participation from several nature conservation organisations promoting sustainability and conservation:

• KaiNav Conservation Foundation focused on anti-snare patrols and educated attendees on how to prevent wildlife poaching.

• Thaba Eco Hotel promoted sustainability and conservation through luxury eco-tourism.

• Rand Water promoted water conservation via their Water Wise brand. Rand Water officials also taught attendees water-saving techniques.

• SANParks Junior Honorary Rangers developed conservation and leadership skills in youth. The young honorary rangers received a full course on nature conservation as they explored the Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve.

• Klipriviersberg Nature Reserve head ranger Trevor Hallaman spoke about the importance of nature conservation. “This Arbor Day celebration is key to promoting nature conservation. We want people to fall in love with nature; that is how they will look after nature.
