Young book lovers shine at Joburg’s Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books finals
Learners from across Johannesburg compete in reading and teamwork challenges, with Forest Hill Primary School taking top honours.
The City of Johannesburg’s Library and Information Services (LIS), under the Community Development Directorate, celebrated young readers’ passion for books at the 2025 Story Skirmish and Battle of the Books final and prize-giving ceremony, held over two days at Emmarentia Dam.
The competitions brought together learners aged nine to 11 from primary schools across Johannesburg’s regions.
Participants were selected and provided with books to read in preparation for the inter-school knockout rounds.
Day one featured the Story Skirmish, while day two hosted the Battle of the Books, where finalists competed for top honours in a test of reading comprehension and teamwork.
Prizes included certificates, trophies, and book vouchers sponsored by The Friends of the Johannesburg Public Libraries.
In the Battle of the Books, Forest Hill Primary School claimed first place.
MEC for Community Development, Tebogo Nkokou, commended the finalists’ dedication and talent.
“Not only did they make it to the top four out of 188 schools, but each team read seven books to prepare for the final knockout round. The hard work of these incredible young readers is truly commendable.”
LIS director Nobuntu Mpendulo praised both participants and supporters for their enthusiasm.
“Everyone here is a winner. The fact that you made it to this stage shows commitment, teamwork, and a love for learning. A huge thank you to everyone who helped make the Battle of the Books 2025 Finals such a success, and to our generous sponsors for their continued support.”
