After nearly a decade as the voice of education in Gauteng, Steve Mabona has officially stepped into a new chapter, this time in the province’s health sector.

The Gauteng Department of Health has confirmed Mabona’s appointment as its spokesperson, welcoming the seasoned communicator back to the department where he previously served with distinction.

In an official announcement, the department described Mabona as a “renowned communicator,” expressing confidence in his ability to strengthen communication and enhance strategic media engagement.

Mabona’s appointment comes shortly after he bid farewell to the Gauteng Department of Education, where he served as spokesperson for nine years. During his tenure, he became a familiar and trusted figure, regularly engaging with the public, media, educators and stakeholders across the province.

Reflecting on his time at the department, Mabona said the role allowed him to interact with a wide range of stakeholders, from school principals and educators to parents and the media, reinforcing the importance of transparent and responsive communication.

His departure marked the end of an era for the education department, with Mabona expressing gratitude for the support and collaboration he received throughout his tenure while also signalling his readiness for new opportunities.

Now returning to the health sector, Mabona is expected to play a key role in shaping public communication at a time when clear, accurate information remains critical for communities across Gauteng.
