Child Protection Month campaign empowers children and parents in South Hills
Awareness workshops in South Hills and Moffat View are educating children, parents and caregivers on preventing abuse, neglect, kidnapping and human trafficking as Child Protection Month is observed nationwide.
May 2026 has been declared Child Protection Month in South Africa, with government and civil society groups intensifying calls to end violence, abuse and exploitation against children.
Under the theme ‘Working Together in Ending Violence Against Children’, the Department of Social Development (DSD) aim to take children out of vulnerable situations and teach them resilience.
DSD and the South African Police Service are driving awareness campaigns nationwide. The green ribbon, symbol of child protection, features prominently in campaigns as communities are urged to take collective responsibility for children’s safety.

Child protection has become a major concern in Johannesburg, with authorities noting increased reports of kidnappings and human trafficking targeting vulnerable children.
In response, community-based workshops in South Hills and Moffat View are ongoing, focusing on prevention, early identification of abuse, and educating parents and caregivers on safety measures.
The public has been urged to report any cases of child abuse, neglect and exploitation.
Reports can be made to the Gender-Based Violence Command Centre on toll-free 0800 428 428 or to Childline on 116.

“Building a Caring Society. Together,” the campaign reminds South Africans that protection is not only the duty of social workers and police, but of every community member.
Campaigns are running under hashtags #ChildProtection2026 and #ChildProtection365 to keep the conversation alive beyond May.
