Public meeting at Glenvista Country Club highlights community frustration over prolonged municipal outages and failing infrastructure.
Mayoral candidate Helen Zille held a public meeting in Ward 23 on September 2 as part of her campaign.
The event, held under the slogans ‘Get Joburg Working For All’ and ‘Believe in Joburg’, took place at Glenvista Country Club.
Ward 23 and surrounding Joburg South residents gathered to hear Zille outline her vision for the city and engage on local service delivery issues.
The public meeting formed part of a series of community engagements being rolled out across Johannesburg ahead of the local government elections, which will be held on November 4.
Zille addressed concerns about water, electricity, infrastructure, and city management before taking questions from residents.
The meeting concluded with a call for residents to become active participants in fixing the city.
During the engagement, Zille outlined plans to improve service delivery in Joburg South, noting that areas such as Ward 23 have been severely affected by prolonged water outages, electricity supply interruptions and deteriorating infrastructure.
She said her focus would be on getting the basics right, including improving water and electricity supplies, tackling crime by better supporting the police, and placing a strong emphasis on maintaining and developing existing infrastructure.
“Joburg South deserves better,” Zille said. “We need to get back to maintaining what we have, developing where we need to, and ensuring residents have reliable water, stable electricity and safer communities. That is how we will get Joburg working for all.”
