On July 18, thousands of children and families across Johannesburg south received food, care and hope during the annual Mandela Day outreach hosted by Convoy of Hope.

Under the theme ‘Together we serve. Together we change lives’, the convoy reached 5 000 people across Johannesburg, embodying Nelson Mandela’s call to service, compassion and unity.

The Mandela Day drive saw trucks branded Convoy of Hope move through communities distributing essential items.

Volunteers handed out hot dogs, sweet packs, fresh fruit, bread, juice, and Rise Against Hunger packs to children and families waiting along the route.

Teams distributed Babies in Need packs for infants and stationery packs to learners and other organisations to support education.

All organisations involved extended their reach by donating to three other organisations, assisting an additional 800 children on Mandela Day.

The success of the convoy was made possible through a broad coalition of sponsors and partners.
Supporting organisations included Chayil Foundation, Metro World Child South Africa, Kayle’s Above The Rim Basketball Academy, From Gangs To Grace, ISKCON, Pick n Pay Mulbarton and Lemon Tree, Mr Noble & Co, End Girl Hate, Physio4You, Lumiaxis, Trans Logistics Services, and Village of Love.

Each partner played a role in packing, transporting, and distributing goods, turning Mandela Day into a province-wide movement of giving.

Volunteers spent the day engaging with communities, sharing meals, and reminding residents that they are seen, valued and supported.

The Convoy of Hope has become a flagship Mandela Day initiative, and organisers say plans are already underway to expand the outreach even further in 2027.
