Ward 57 community activist and founder of Lee-Gardo NPO and NPC, Lee-Ann Juries, is calling on residents, City entities and community organisations to unite in cleaning the stream that runs alongside the flats in Moffat View and the Springbok informal settlement.

Juries said the polluted stream has become a health and safety concern, particularly for children and elderly residents in the area.

“I work with underprivileged children and the elderly, and it is heartbreaking to see the condition of the stream. The pollution is unhygienic, and children cannot play freely because of the filth. We are asking the City’s entities to partner with us in a clean-up campaign. The community is ready and willing to help,” she said.

According to Juries, residents approached her organisation to seek assistance in addressing the ongoing problem.

“The smell from the stream is unbearable, and illegal activities, including cable burning, are taking place along its banks. There was even a woman’s body discovered in the stream earlier this year. We need a coordinated clean-up campaign to restore the area and make it safe again. It is a community issue that requires everyone to get involved,” she added.

Juries believes a joint effort between residents, community organisations and municipal departments will not only improve the environment but also help restore pride in the neighbourhood.
