WATCH: Soccer legends donate borehole to Forest High School

The donation aims to ease ongoing water shortages and ensure teaching and learning can continue without disruption.

With water shortages continuing to affect the area, local soccer legends have stepped in to assist Forest High School by donating a borehole on June 11.

The borehole was donated by soccer legend Mluleki Mabuza, who has been actively involved in maintaining the school’s soccer field.

Together with his team, Mabuza said the donation was a token of appreciation to the school for allowing them to use the field for training sessions and matches.

“We have six teams in the area, and the school allowed us to use the field to play and exercise. We then promised to assist them wherever we could. Water is a major challenge in this area, and this borehole will play an important role going forward,” said Mabuza.

He added that the soccer field has become an important space that brings the community together.

“The field plays an integral role in uniting people in the area. We not only play here, but also socialise with members of the public. We promise to continue maintaining the field because the grass requires constant care. As part of showing our appreciation, we will also repair the fence around the school to help keep everyone inside safe,” he said.

Fellow soccer legends Martin Moyo and Jabu Ndlovu supported Mabuza’s sentiments and committed themselves to ensuring that the new development at the school is properly maintained.

The donation follows a community resolution passed on April 11 at a public meeting held at the school. Community members pledged to protect the school and support efforts to keep learners and staff safe following the killing of Grade Eight learner Litha Duba.

The SGB maintenance coordinator, Eric Khetho, welcomed the gesture from the soccer legends, saying the borehole would benefit both the school and the wider community.

“This will not only help the school but the community at large. Everyone will benefit. This is a legacy for all South Africans, and as the SGB, we say thank you,” said Khetho.

School principal Shaffy Stevens also expressed appreciation, saying the borehole would help address ongoing water challenges.

“This will help overcome the water problems in the area. If we have a steady supply of water, teaching and learning will not be disrupted because when there is no water, the school has to be dismissed,” said Stevens.
