Electrical outages hit Crown Mines, Winchester Hills as City Power teams investigate

Areas in Joburg south face power cuts.

Multiple Johannesburg south suburbs were left without power after outages were reported in Crown Mines and Winchester Hills areas from June 12, with City Power technical teams now on site to assess the damage. City Power confirmed that an outage affecting customers in Winchester Hills, Winchester Hills Ext 1 and surrounding areas was reported via the Reuven System Distribution Centre (SDC). Operators have been dispatched to investigate the cause. In Crown Mines and the surrounding areas, separate technical teams are currently on-site investigating the cause of a related outage. The utility said it would communicate additional information to residents once investigations are finalised.

Customers in the following areas are impacted:

• Crown Mines and surrounding areas • Winchester Hills • Winchester Hills Ext 1 • Surrounding suburbs fed from Reuven SDC City Power spokesperson Isaac Mangena said the teams were working to restore supply safely and as quickly as possible. “We understand the frustration that comes with unplanned outages, especially during winter. Our technical teams are currently on-site in both Crown Mines and the Winchester Hills feed area to investigate and isolate the fault. Safety is our top priority, and once we’ve identified the exact cause, we’ll provide residents with a clearer restoration timeframe. We ask customers to switch off sensitive appliances and treat all cables as live,” Mangena said. Residents have been urged to report any faults directly to City Power and to avoid overloading the network when supply returns. For more information, contact 011 870 7000.
