Mondeor High pupils win presentation award at Wits innovation challenge
The team earns Best Overall Presentation after developing GeoPulse, a vibration-detection device aimed at improving safety in South Africa's informal artisanal mining sector.
Mondeor High School learners have put their creativity and problem-solving skills on display after achieving Best Overall Presentation in their group at the Wits Integrated Experience at Wits University.
The learners competed alongside pupils from some of South Africa’s top feeder schools, making their achievement even more significant.
As part of the challenge, pupils were asked to explore whether South Africa’s informal artisanal mining sector, commonly known as ‘zama zamas’, could be formalised.
Learners build mining safety device
Rising to the challenge, the Mondeor High team developed GeoPulse, an innovative vibration-detection device designed to contribute to safer and more regulated mining practices.
The concept demonstrated the learners’ ability to apply technology and innovative thinking to a complex real-world issue affecting communities across the country.
The competition also provided the learners with an opportunity to step outside their comfort zones and present their ideas confidently in a prestigious university environment.
Their Best Overall Presentation achievement is a testament to their courage, creativity, teamwork and ability to work together to develop solutions to challenging problems.
