Exercise by cleaning the Bellavista Old Age Home

To have a place to live at such a meagre rental with a garden should be regarded as a blessing.

I wish to refer to the article in the COURIER dated May 29, with the heading ‘Residents of old age home fed up’ showing some of the residents complaining that since last December they are responsible for the maintenance of the garden and cleaning the dirt all over the place.

Reading the article, I felt somewhat annoyed at their complaints about having to clean up the place. The dry leaves covering the place is a natural occurrence because it is winter time, but the dirt is caused by humans. The residents should learn not to throw their dirt around.

To have a place to live at such a meagre rental with a garden should be regarded as a blessing. How many people in our country are homeless or living under appalling and cramped-up conditions, without electricity, water or toilets?

I am reminded of my grandfather, at the age of 85 years, he was still very active in his garden. It was his pride and joy. He always told me, whenever he feels sick or listless, that was a signal for him to work in his garden. He said that working with the soil and the plant is therapeutic. It heals, revitalises and stimulates.

Looking at the picture in the COURIER of the five men, who are the complainants; they should feel ashamed of themselves. They all look healthy, but lazy, posing among the dry leaves all scattered around them. To rake the leaves together and throw it into the dustbin, should be good exercise and it strengthens their immune system to fight disease. Such an act of doing something constructive will instil a sense of pride.
