On February 8, I noticed a hole of about 30cm by 30cm and 40cm deep on my grass on the pavement in front of my house.
I maintain the lawn in front of my house.
Then at about 4.30pm, I notice that a crater of about 1m by 1m wide and 1.5m deep had formed and was getting bigger.
I looked into the hole and saw that the main water pipe supplying water to the entire street was gushing strong, clean water, forming an underground tunnel thus causing the crater to grow bigger as the top soil gave way.
I immediately reported the matter to Joburg Water, but was told the turnaround period was 24 hours.
I felt this was ridiculous as a child or an adult could fall in and get seriously injured.
I then contacted my ward councillor and explained to him the eminent danger.
He immediately began to escalate the issue as a matter of urgency.
Then on February 9 at 7.30am, Joburg Water came and repaired the pipe and filled the crater.
They finalised the matter at about 4 pm.
I would like to thank Clr Mongameli Mnyameni, had it not been for his intervention the crater would have grown bigger and someone in the community could have gotten hurt.
Thank you, Mr. Mnyameni.
